You’re probably reading this because you want to know how to make acrylic paint thinner. There are numerous ways to accomplish this. Continue reading to learn how to thin acrylic paint!

If you are interested in acrylic pouring, this post may not be for you because there are specific mediums available for that type of art.

What do I do if my paint is too thick?

Speaking of mediums, one of my personal favourites for softening thick acrylic paints and extending blending time is GOLDEN’s OPEN Acrylic medium. The OPEN acrylic medium is a liquid that you mix into your acrylic paints to keep them from drying out too quickly. I’ve mentioned it before, but it really helps with blending out your paints and softening the texture of them. One advantage of this medium is that you don’t need much of it to get the results you want; simply add a few drops to your paint palette and mix it in with your acrylic paint.

What can I use instead of acrylic thinner?

You could be in the middle of a painting right now, or you simply need something nearby to thin your acrylic paints. That something is plain old water. This is the simplest method for thinning out paint because it is as simple as dipping your paintbrush in a glass of water or keeping a water spray bottle handy to spray on your paint palette.

One disadvantage of this method is that if you use too much water with your paints, you will get a watercolour effect. You may notice some patchiness on your painting as a result of the water thinning out the paint that is already on the canvas, resulting in this transparent patch.

To address this issue, to prevent uneven layers on your painting, the best tip is to use small amounts of water and use the water on your paint palette. If you use a wet brush on a canvas that already has layers of paint that aren’t completely dry, the paint will start lifting and leaving patches on your work.

So those are the two methods to thin acrylic paint at home. If you want to save money, using water to thin acrylic paint is an excellent option. Personally, I use both  interchangeably. However, if you’re a slow painter who needs more time to work, a medium can be a game changer.
