You may be wondering, What is the point of varnish? or What does varnishing a painting do? So here are the top three reasons I chose to varnish my artwork, as well as some of the wonderful things I’ve noticed after doing so.
Protection
If you hang your painting on a wall near a window or in a corner of your room, sunlight, dust, and dirt will damage the quality of your work; so, to create a layer of protection and keep your work in good condition from these environmental factors, varnishing is a great idea. The last thing you want is a yellowing dusty painting!
Finished Look
When creating art, we may use different types of paint and mediums,as a result, your final piece may have some shinier areas and some areas that are more muted. Using a varnish and applying it to your work will result in a more cohesive finished look. Everything comes together. It’s also great that you can choose between matte, satin, and glossy varnishes.
Enhances colours
The main reason I like varnishing my paintings is that it makes the colours pop so much more. As soon as you swipe the first layer of varnish on your painting, the tones and values begin to become much more vibrant. It’s a great finishing touch to the painting process.
