I have a bunch of paintings that are ready to be varnished, so I thought I’d write a post answering some of the most common questions I’ve had, and I’m sure many others do, about varnishing acrylic paintings at home.
Should I varnish my acrylic painting?
Varnishing your acrylic painting is a fantastic finishing touch if you want your artwork to remain in good condition over the years, bring out the vibrancy of the colours, and create a finished look.
When should you varnish a painting?
When you have finished painting, wait until the painting is completely dry. Even though acrylic paints dry quickly, I would still recommend waiting a few days before varnishing.

Can you varnish a canvas painting?
Yes, you can varnish a canvas painting. It is one of the best ways to protect your artwork from dust and debris while also keeping your canvas painting in good condition.
How do you varnish a painting at home?
The first step is to go out and buy varnish. There are numerous finishes available, including liquitex’s satin, gloss, and matte varnishes. So, depending on the final appearance you desire, you can select from those options.
1.Make sure your painting is completely dry and the surface is free of dust and debris.
2.Pour a small amount of varnish into a container and spread it evenly over the painting in a thin layer by swiping across the canvas with a synthetic flat bush.
3.Before adding any additional layers, ensure that the previous layer is completely dry. 1-2 layers are sufficient.
(TIP:Because synthetic brushes are sleek and have a smooth surface, the varnish appears smoother.)
