I painted a small winter scene with frosty trees today. I used acrylic paint and a 5×7 inch canvas to create this painting. Continue reading to learn how to paint snow, frosty trees, and other winter scenes. The image below inspired me to create this acrylic painting of a winter scene.

HOW TO PAINT A SNOW WINTER SCENE WITH ACRYLIC PAINT

1.I started by applying white paint with a hint of blue to the top half of the canvas with a medium sized flatbrush. I used white acrylic with a little orange in the middle of the canvas. The sky is almost white, with only hints of colour added to create a frosty winter sky.

2. This is what the sky looks like after it has been blended. As you can see, it is almost white, but the top half of the canvas has a blue hint and the middle of the canvas has an orange hint.

3. I then used a small amount of white paint to outline the painting’s snow area. This area will only see snow.

4. I chose a deep blue, almost black colour for the trees. To make the trees, I used a small flat brush and a palette knife. As we get closer to the centre, I’m using my palette knife to create really faint figures of the trees to give the illusion of distance.

5. I used the same deep blue shade and a fan brush to create the tree leaves. After it dried, I used the same brush and white paint to go over the same leaves in the same motion.

6. I’m using a grey shade and a small flat brush to lightly run that colour down the tree trunks to add dimension.

7. We need to do something with those tiny centre trees we made. So I’m making really subtle white branches with a small brush and white paint.

8. I used plain white paint and a super light blue to make the snow. I’m applying it with a medium-sized flat brush. The light blue paint is for the snow’s dark areas, and the white paint is for the snow’s light areas. I’m concentrating the blue shade around the trees because that’s where the shadows would normally fall.

9. I’m back with the pallet knife and white paint, this time to make full white tree trunks and branches. This creates the appearance of snow-covered trees.
And there you have it, the completed painting!
