There will be many learning curves on your acrylic painting journey. I knew I had to learn my way around to find the right paints, how to mix colours, and what surface to paint on.

Anyway, once I had everything I needed and found a formula, I was able to really focus on learning how to paint, so in this post,I’ve compiled a list of what you’ll need in your acrylic painting starter kit to make simple, acrylic painting for beginners.

What is the best acrylic paint for beginners?

The first step in painting is to find the right paint! If you chose acrylic paint as your medium of choice, you’ll be confronted with additional options, which can be confusing. Should you get soft body acrylic paints, heavy body acrylic paints?

If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend the Liquitex BASICS, which is a good option for beginners. In fact, I continue to use Liquitex basics. It is ideal for all types of creatives, but especially for beginners or students. You can simply buy the five primary colours and mix them to make any colour you want. You don’t have to go out and buy 24 different colours of acrylic paint.

What’s the best surface to acrylic paint on?

There are numerous surfaces on which to paint. When you first start out, you can paint on almost anything. The most important thing is to ensure that the surface is primed. You can find my post on canvas preparation here…

Alternatively,to make canvas painting easy for beginners, primed canvases/canvas boards can be purchased. If you choose to use watercolour/acrylic papers, it is a good idea to buy gesso and apply it to the painting surface because it will help you blend your paints much more smoothly.

What are the best paintbrushes for acrylic painting?

Finding the right brushes transformed my game. It was important that I find brushes with a smooth, sleek texture that did not leave brush marks. As a result, I recommend synthetic brushes for acrylic painting because they keep their shape and condition and have a smooth surface that allows paints to blend nicely.

Do I need acrylic painting mediums?

This is dependent on the type of art you want to create and your personal taste. Are you someone who likes to take their time when painting and needs a few extra minutes to ensure everything is well blended, or are you someone who works quickly and doesn’t mind if your paints dry quickly? Check out my post on blending acrylics for more information.

So those are my top picks for what to include in your acrylic painting starter kit. It is very simple, and once you learn your style and find what you like, you can add or change things around to find something that works for you.
