Today I’m going to show you how I paint a foggy tree scene with the use of acrylic paint. Fog in a painting adds a sense of atmosphere to the final piece, so I used it in this painting to create a snowy winter scene.

This painting was created on a 5×7 inch canvas with Liquitex acrylic paints.

1. First and foremost, we will paint the top half of the canvas with super light blues, beginning with the closest to white and progressing to a darker blue.

2. For the bottom half of the canvas, we’re just going to go in with a deep blue shade and blend all of those shades together to make a seamless blend.

3. Stipple the shape of the trees in a super dark green with a small fan brush. You only need that dark green shade to make the Christmas tree figures. Switch between larger and smaller figures to change the size of the trees.

4. Simply stipple the entire bottom half of the canvas with that super dark green shade, then take a lighter muted green and use the same motion but place it lightly to create dimension. The trees will now start to stand out. Take care not to lose the shape of the trees.

5. We’re going in with the fog after making sure all of the paint is dry. Use a small amount of white paint on a large fluffy brush to create the fog effect, starting from the top and working your way down in circular motions.

6. Stipple those trees that we lost to the fog with that super dark green shade and the small fan brush. I’m using the same technique and shades as before to concentrate on the bottom of the canvas. And there you have it, our finished winter snow painting.
