‘What can I drink to warm me up?’ Well, what better time to share one of my favourite drinks, masala chai, with the season of staying in and hot beverages?

This desi tea, also known as desi chai, is from the South Asian region. With a flagrant cinnamon flavour, this spiced tea is my go-to during the colder months!

Originally, this tea was made with a whole milk and water ratio, but for those who are lactose intolerant you can easily substitute with a milk of your choice. I prefer oat milk for its smooth creamy texture.

This is one of the easy tea recipes you could include in your fall/winter,hot beverage, recipe collection!

What is masala chai made of?

Masala chai contains a fragrant blend of black tea leaves along with an array of assorted spiced which include; cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves and black pepper.

Combined with water and brewed with milk for that extra creaminess it makes for a delightful concoction,a flavorful drink for the colder months.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of milk (or oat milk)
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 small sticks of cinnamon
  • 3 crushed cardamoms
  • Sweetener of choice
  • 1 black tea bag opened (or 1 tablespoon of loose black tea)

This desi tea recipe is extremely adaptable as many people vary the spices, adding cloves, a pinch of salt, and so on.

However, the listed ingredients are sufficient to make a delicious chai.

You have the choice of  using loose leaf black tea or you can just rip open a teabag . I prefer to use  oat milk if im going dairy-free as it does make for a smooth chai.

This can serve 1-2 people depending on the size of your mug, but you can double the recipe to make more.

How to make chai:

1.) In a small saucepan, combine water, crushed cardamom, cinnamon, and tea leaves. If you prefer sugar add sweetness to your taste.

2.) Bring the mixture to a gentle boil on a medium heat and add  in the milk, stir and allow the tea to come to a high boil, then simmer for 2-5 minutes.

3.) Remove from the heat and strain into your favorite mug you can also add your sweetener at this point if you did not do so earlier.

There you have your homemade masala chai. This tea complements biscuits, cake.It is also great after a hearty meal. I truly hope you enjoy the recipe.
